How the mymobility app supports your knee or hip replacement journey

Mymobility Main

If you have had a knee or hip replacement surgery at my practice, we might ask you to use the mymobility app (by Zimmer Biomet), to support you through your surgical journey. We use the app to give our patients important information before and after surgery and to help monitor your pain and progress. You can also communicate with your care team through the app.

Here’s how mymobility works.

Signing up is easy

Signing up on the mymobility app is easy. Simply download the app onto your Android or Apple smartphone. The app can also connect with an Apple watch. My practice will add your details to the mymobility system. When you open the app for the first time, you will be prompted to follow a few easy steps to sign up. This includes creating a username and password. You will need Wi-Fi access to use the mymobility app.

When you use the app for the first time, you will have to score your pain on a scale of zero to 10. The app will also ask you to input your weight and height details to work out your BMI score.

Before your surgery

Before your knee or hip surgery, the app will provide clear, step-by-step instructions on how to prepare for your operation. You will be able to read through short, bite-sized pieces of information on how to use the app, what knee or hip replacement surgery is, what to expect from the surgery, how to prepare for your surgery, how to prepare for the recovery period, and what your rehabilitation will entail. The app will prompt you to read through each of these educational sections.

The mymobility app will send you personalised daily tasks related to your surgery. If you have any questions or concerns, you can use the app to text your care team (this includes your orthopaedic surgeon, physiotherapists, and their support staff). A member of your care team will answer your questions over text and will let you know whether it is necessary for you to come in to have your questions or concerns addressed in a face-to-face consultation.

After your surgery

The app will continue to be a useful guide for you after your surgery, during the recovery period. You will receive clear information on what to expect after surgery, when to contact your surgeon, tips to manage pain and other symptoms, and precautions you will need to take.

The app will send daily reminders and information around your medication schedule, wound care, and physical therapy exercises. These reminders will help you to remain consistent and adhere to your recovery plan.

The mymobility app has a 6-week-long built-in physiotherapy programme. The app will remind you to do your daily exercises. Easy-to-understand videos on the app will demonstrate exactly how to do each exercise. Once you have completed the exercises, the app will ask you to fill in how easy or difficult you found that particular exercise.

This information will be logged on a dashboard, which both you and your care team can access. Your daily step count will be recorded by the app too, which will help us to measure your mobility improvement. All of this will help us, your care team, to monitor your progress.

You will occasionally be asked to score your pain or to complete short assessments which are designed to track how well you are able to perform different activities after your surgery.

Mymobility adds value to your surgical journey

The mymobility app is a valuable, easy-to-use digital tool which assists you with your surgical journey. Not only does it give you useful information and reminders to help you adhere to your recovery plan, but it also gives your care team better insight into your recovery progress.
